This print
captures the beauty and aloha of Maui, Hawaii’s
Lahaina Town, through the presentation of the West
Maui Mountains, Cane Fields, and Tropical Flowers,
along with the famous Carthaginian Ship and Pioneer
Inn. The Carthaginiun is representative of the 19th
century small, fast freighters that brought the
first commerce to these Islands and is the only
authentically restored brig in the world. After the
first Carthaginian was lost at sea in April 1972,
while on the way to Honolulu for repairs, a search
was initiated to find a replacement. A brig was
located in Northern Europe, and sailed across the
seas with an all Lahaina crew to become a part of
Lahaina. On December 13, 2005, this ship was sunk
and now lies at rest in the ocean off the shore of
Lahaina, as it was breaking apart from old age. It
has become a popular underwater dive site and will
always have an ‘aura’ in the waters off Lahaina.The
Pioneer Inn was built in 1901 by a former Canadian
Mounted Policeman named George Freeland. Upon
arriving in Maui on a search for a criminal that was
never caught, Mr. Freeland fell in love with a
beautiful Hawaiian woman, Anabel Kahuhu. Mr.
Freeland constructed the Inn on the exact spot where
the Hawaiian alii (royalty) used to meet. King
Kamehameha III wrote the first constitution for the
kingdom at this very location. The Inn was finally
renovated and expanded in 1964. Its atmosphere of
the old whaling days and somewhat rowdy sailors
still lingers.
