Pools of Oheo

Back to Prints

The Kipahulu area, beyond Hana, is rich with ancient Hawaiian history. Kipahulu means “fetch from exhausted gardens”, and is one of three ancient districts of the island. The waters of the Palikea Stream form the many pools of ‘O’heo, so named from the ‘O’heo Gulch, through which the stream flows as it journeys to the ocean. Rare aquatic life, such as the freshwater fish, ‘o’opu, can be found in these beautiful, almost ‘fantasy like’ pools. The archaeological evidence of Kipahulu’s prehistoric temples and fishing villages proves the importance of this area to the ancient Hawaiians. One should consider it a privilege to have walked through this ancient Hawaiian area, so rich in cultural legacy.
